On 24 March European commission decided to deploy coordination and evaluation team to Namibia, which was affected by large floods. Namibia sent request for assistance through the European Union.
Vladimír Vlček (Fire rescue Service of the Czech Republic) belonged to the six-member team. Vladimír Vlček is a liaison officer and he has rich experiences with missions abroad.Vladimír Vlček left the Czech Republic on 25 March in the afternoon. He flew from Prague to Brussels where the team centralized and in the evening they flew together to Namibia.
The task of this team was to evaluate situation within a few days and recommend further steps including the possibility of providing humanitarian assistance.
According to information available in Namibia, due to the floods more than 90 people were killed, more than 8200 people had to be placed in makeshift camps and floods affected more than 300 000 inhabitants of this African country. This assistance was realized by the EU Civil protection mechanism, which in case of emergency (natural disasters, major accidents, terorist attack etc.) allows European countries to provide expertise, financial, material or rescue assistance..
The national contact point of the Czech Republic for the EU Mechanism is the Operational and Information centre of the Ministry of Interior – General Directorate of Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic.
