EU.CARPATHEX 2011 – Exercise of CZERT CBRN team in Poland 12 - 16 September 2011

The CZERT CBRN team (Czech Emergency Response Team Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear detection and sampling) have participated on exercise EU.CARPATHEX 2011. The exercise took place in Poland in Podkarpatski region from 12th to 16th September 2011. This exercise simulated emergencies related to severe accidents in technological processes and rail transport where leakage of CBRN agents occured. Team was composed of members of FRB Prague and FRB of central Bohemia region (chemical laboratory Kamenice). Another two members of FRS of the CR have participated in this exercise as the evaluators.

The exercise was attended by over one thousand participants from five countries.

During this exercise, the Czech team intervened in two simulated emergencies and they detected a total of 47 hazardous chemicals and 3 radioactive samples. The mobile chemical laboratory intervened in simulated car accident, where the barrels with unknow substance from the truck fell into the lake. Our experts have made the detection of these substances and determined whether or not the water was contaminated. Another event simulated explosion in the warehouse with chemicals. Our unit performed in the sampling and analysis of large quantities of hazardous material in the contaminated area.

Teams were also asked to prove its sovereignity over the entire exercise, which our team managed as a single one.

On Friday, 16th September the demontration exercise was held. Kristalina Georgieva – European Union Commissioner responsible for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response and Polish Minister of Interior visited the exercise.

During the exercise the technical seminar was organized in the hotel in Rzeszow.
